Target Participants
Participants must have at least two years of experience working as a social and community work practitioner and/or counsellor. They should have attended “Working with Youths – Introduction” course and/or “Working with Youths – Intermediate” course. Those who do not meet these criteria may be accepted on a case-by-case basis.
Learning Objective
Upon completion of the course, participants will be able to:
1) Demonstrate skills and knowledge to engage youths and their families through advance practice interventions
2) Identify techniques that enhance professional competence and safety which includes supervision skills, safe practice in difficult situations and managing challenging situations
Course Outline
1) Strengths-based practice approaches
2) Team problem solving skills and individual profile as a team member
3) Use of supervision
4) “Handles” – An anger management programme
4) Adolescent survivors of family violence
5) Safe practice in dangerous situations
6) Reality Therapy
7) Managing challenging situations effectively
8) Personal skill and strengths identification for the youth
9) Substance abuse interventions
Trainer
Mike Garland is currently works full-time in private practice as a Counsellor, Life Coach, Supervisor, Social Work Consultant and Trainer. He has many years of experience working with youth-at-risk, both in a professional and voluntary capacity. In his current practice he specialises in work with adolescents, adult males, couples and families. He has also worked as Lecturer in Social and Community Work Practice at Massey University, a Trainer in the New Zealand Children, Young Person’s and Their Families Service, Senior Counsellor in a residential institution for at-risk adolescents, a Correction Officer in the Criminal Justice System and as a school teacher. He has over twenty-five years of experience in voluntary and professional work with young people.

Darryl Gardiner is the National Director of Youth For Christ, New Zealand. Mr Gardiner has many years of experience in youth work. He has been a youth worker for more than twenty-five years. His experience includes sixteen years running a Boy’s Home for teenage males referred from courts, police, schools and parents, directing a national programme working with youth-at-risk. He has conducted Youth and Community Training Programmes in New Zealand, Australia, Singapore and Europe. He is an ordained Anglican Minister and is in demand as a speaker both nationally and internationally. He has weekly slots on national radio and television in New Zealand
